Guy Harvey Outpost kicked off 2015 with the first event of their Bonfire Festival Series, a two-day Wahoo Tournament and the unveiling of Artist Bobby Little's Burning Wahoo sculpture. The first event was held at the Old Bahama Bay Resort in gorgeous West End, Bahamas. Anglers fought wind and challenging weather for the largest wahoo and aggregate total over the two-day period. Adding to the fun was an art competition for students at the All Age School in West End, kitesurfing, and a Tito’s Drink Competition.
WHAT IS A BONFIRE TOURNAMENT?
Every Bonfire Tournament Festival celebrates the Outpost Attitude by promoting fishing, adventure, art and conservation. At each Bonfire Event, Rum Cay artist Bobby Little, creates a unique ocean-themed sculpture inspired by the location and its fishery. These "larger than life" works of art are crafted from recyclable materials that Bobby finds in the Bahamas. For West End, Bobby brought to life a 20' metal wahoo sculpture secured by a base that doubles as a BBQ grill for a beach bbq.

Guy Harvey Outpost fully supports the "Trash to Treasure" medium of creating art from recycled objects. In partnership with Bobby Little's artistic vision, we look forward to seeing more of these sculptures. Not only does this help keep our beaches clean and beautiful it also leaves an artful lasting reminder to recycle and respect our oceans. If you are interested in Bobby Little's art for your home or place of business, you may contact him direct at 954 525-2225.

After battling the weather for two days, a Champion emerged from the field! Congratulations to Fishin A Loan from St. Augustine, Florida for landing the largest wahoo at a whopping 63.9lbs on Day 1. To insure their top place in the tournament, on Day 2 Fishin A Loan brought in another beauty of 60.5 lbs! This helped push them to the top with a total of 448 lbs of hoo!

Second place award congratulations goes to Sharkbait, first to weigh-in on both days and grand total of 182.3 lbs with their largest catch of 44.1 lbs.

Not to be left out of the fight, Matchless brought in a respectable 123.8 lbs total for both days. In the challenging weather, the "Pure Grit" award goes to these guys for using every fishing minute of the day and just beating the cutoff on both days! “Weigh” to go to all teams that fished both days of the tournament.

GIVING BACK
As we say at Outpost, “Travel with a Purpose”. Our purpose when creating the Bonfire Festival Series is to provide a unique celebration at Outpost Destinations while promoting conservation, awareness and education to future artists and ocean enthusiasts. For the West End event, we partnered with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism to provide fun, educational events for 30 selected students of the West End All Age School. These students were invited to join Bobby Little in learning art skills directly from the artist himself. Bobby donated his time to help students create their own commemorative Guy Harvey Outpost Burning Wahoo t-shirts, as well as teaching them the craftsman skill of jewelry-making using locally-gathered conch shells. Additionally, a portion of the event proceeds is being donated to West End All Age School through the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.

Bravo to the participating students from West End for sharing the day of art, education and fun! And thank you to our sponsors that allowed this to happen in particularly Insetta, Old Bahama Bay, Tito’s Vodka, Sands Beer, Bahamas Tourism, Balearia, Bacardi, and Exo-Gear.

HAVE TITO’S, WILL TRAVEL
Tito's Vodka helped all our fishing teams cap off each day of fishing with a refreshing Tito's Cocktail. Mixologist came to compete in the Tito's Wahoo drink competition to win the award for the best recipe. Winning votes went to Insetta Boats, Eddie's GullyWash and artist of many talents, Bobby Little's "Burning Wahoo" cocktail.

Of course, with all the "voting" going on for best Wahoo cocktail, a little food was needed. What better compliment for a tropical cocktail then freshly made, locally produced, West End Conch Salad? Five of West Ends leading conch salad chefs were on-site to share samples and sell their scrumptious creations, allowing all to enjoy a wonderful evening of cocktails and conch.

Recipes to try at home for your wahoo cocktail

Insetta Hoo Cocktail
-Tito's vodka 1 1/4 oz
- 1/2 oz pineapple
- 1/2 oz lemon-lime soda
- splash of raspberry liqueur or fresh raspberry juice

For Dinner and a "show", ask for Eddie at Eddy's Gully Wash, on the beach next to Teasers. This local bartender won our Wahoo Flare contest, showing us how to flare "West End style" while serving up a winning Tito's Vodka Wahoo cocktail. Try one and see if you can figure out his mixture because Eddie would not share his secret in making his new Gully Wahoo Wash.
Rum Cay Burning Wahoo by Bobby Little: Bobby says “Fireball Hoo?” He brought the heat by infusing his Vodka with Bahamian Peppers from Rum Cay. A nice touch in creating his own Burning Wahoo Cocktail.
KITEBOARDERS IN PARADISE
Although the strong winds over the weekend proved a challenge for anglers and bonfire activities, not all were discouraged with the wind. Kite boarders found just what they were looking for at Old Bahama Bay with a steady breeze that proved perfect for playing among the waves. Kite boarder Gary Rhodes and Angela Salcito showed off some awesome skills and hang time that proved wind or shine there is always something fun going on at Old Bahama Bay.
